Writing a book review for second grade

We referred back to the concept of audience as we tried to push them to provide text evidence for their opinions.

Students spent time reading those reviews, and we gathered them together at the end of workshop to share what they noticed. They can also publish their reviews online or share them through a kid-friendly blog. I am lucky enough to have the full Lucy Calkins writing curriculum at my new school for the first time and I was able to use that to create a pacing guide with my team that worked for our first graders.

This checklist was directly linked to the rubric, which helped with consistency and made the revision work more meaningful.

My three years in Vegas I had a shorter writing block and a shorter day than I do here in Massachusetts, so naturally I had to make a few tweaks and changes to my writing curriculum.

We began our work like we begin every genre-based unit of study in writing — by immersing the students in that genre. Students divided into groups of 4 and were assigned one of the 3 questions.

I can tell you the students loved all three! Brock downloaded a large stack of book reviews published online by students. After doing this lesson with 2 different groups, I learned that for 2nd grade it was really important to write down what they were going to say, so students first wrote out their response to their question on an index card.

For the app, students just have to type in the code to access the question. My kids and I truly loved this little unit and if you like the set up of my other writing packs, I think you will enjoy this as well.

Bolt is a dog. Teaching students to choose one or more sentences and focus on telling more about that sentence to expand stories.

We had students publish their revised and edited drafts onto nicer paper. Students traded their drafts with their writing partners and completed the checklist as they read. Second grade is about to begin their unit on book reviews, and 3rd grade is finishing their pieces this week.

What does this child need to learn next? We, of course, still continued to use seasonal writing prompts and even did a few, fun crafts, but my students got a much deeper knowledge of all three common core writing standards this year than ever before. He is writing about a dog from a movie he has seen.

The only way to really emphasize the importance of considering the audience is to give students multiple opportunities to share their work with an audience. I truly love the transformation from our beginning writing in August to the fiction stories with characters, problems, solutions, and more that we write in June.

He could benefit from several mini-lessons to make his writing more interesting. I wanted to take it a little further — and I am glad I did! It took our opinion writing a bit further and got my students to dig a little deeper.

Second Grade: Writing Sample 3

I wanted students to have a chance to practice writing the parts of a book review, but rather than do it whole group, we used FlipGrid. Bolt trains all day. In Vegas, we would spend a trimester each on writing personal narratives, writing informative texts, and then writing opinion papers.

This child has a lot to say about this topic, but he is writing it in a list form without a variety of sentence beginnings. But me… I needed a bit more. We also spent some time writing persuasive letters to our principal and our parents.

There are 3 more sheets of review cards, along with blank ones for you to fill in reviewable items. A few anchor charts and to help students reference throughout the unit.
